November 27, 2012 - Live shows trump albums?

This morning I was thinking about artists whose live shows are better than their albums. This isn't a slight at any artist and their albums, but a preference of me (and maybe others?). Here is part of my life (updated as people post and as I think of more):
The Sadies - their live performance is one of the best ever, but cannot be captured on album (not even their live album)
Hawksley Workman - he is such a performer and has a very dynamic personality that would be impossible to show on an album without all the other elements
Rose Cousins - her albums often include other instruments and voices, which I feel takes away from the power and beauty of her voice
Little Miss Higgins  - Her live performance marginally beats out her albums and is mostly because of her amazing ability to play guitar, her awesome outfits, her stories, and her playing slide guitar with a shot or pint glass!
The Weber Brothers+
Sunparlour Players - Nothing can compare to the amount of sweat that these guys leave on stage... two drum kits and a whole lot of heart and soul are shown in their live show. It's impossible to put that on a an album.

If you have a band to add - comment below!

Immaculate Machine* - Broken Ship - Ones and zeros

+ This was the comment from a friend of mine:
"I adore the The Weber Brothers live, but don't enjoy their albums. Too much editing, too clean a sound. I like their raunchy dirty sound, it's real, it's natural, it's what the blues are supposed to be. If they ever do a live album that might be something I'd be interested in, but as far as I'm concerned their albums don't even sound like them. Live they are too fabulous to be missed."

November 14th Playlist "say it in your mind until you know that the words are right"

This morning I woke up with a serious excitement about the show today. There isn't any particular reason, but I was excited to play music. Maybe it was because I promised Ishmael* that I would play some Shotgun Jimmie for his birthday or maybe it's because I was planning to play some Edith Piaf. It's probably for lots of these reasons. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the show this morning!

October 24, 2012 Playlist!

This morning I learned something cool about Led Zeppelin's D'yer Mak'er - according to Wikipedia the title of this song is actually pronounced Jamaica! I seriously learn something every day. I also learned that the name I would like to use for a music twitter page is already taken! Ack! So do I register another name or do I wait for this person to be inactive for soooo long that it comes up? This is a decision that has to be made, albeit a very small decision. Happy winter everyone!

There are times in mys life where I need music to get through the day. I am currently living in one of those times. However, through the drama and chaos I find solace in the words of so many amazing independent musicians. I am so grateful for good music and all that it brings. It also makes these rainy days brighter.

April 11, 2012 "Falling over this city and the best of my worst ideas"

For the past couple of days I have had Chantal Kreviazuk's song "Before you" in my head. It was a favourite of mine when I was in my early 20s. Sometimes I am appalled at my taste in music from my early 20s (Britney Spears' first 2 albums can still be found in my music collection), but sometimes I'm surprised at some of the good stuff that was considered "pop." I mean, just because it's popular doesn't necessarily mean that it's crappy right? Well, that was reinforced to me today as I played Chantal's popular song. That song is pretty awesome! At the bottom of the playlist is a Grooveshark playlist of some of the songs I played this morning, including Chantal's song.

February 29th - Brutal Break-up Songs

When I posed the question on my Facebook page "What is the most brutal break-up song?" people thought that I was going through a break-up. I'm not. I have been thinking of break-up songs lately and about the people the songs are ABOUT. It is a private situation that gets made public. Luke Doucet's Broken One is one of the most brutal break-up songs in this regard. That's really how this whole thing got going. So today was all about brutal break-up songs. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the discussion on Facebook and beyond!

February 8, 2012 Playlist! "I can tell we'll never be safe until the walls fall down..."

And every morning chipping away
til the walls fall down

It's February! The month of love. The month of nauseating amounts of hearts and pink and red. I'm not so much a Valentine's day person, except I love love. I love music. I love my family. I love my friends. I love my bonus kids. I love my fitness pal. So love the love, don't love the consumerism that goes along with it.

January 25th Playlist! "So this is the new year and I have no resolutions"

So it's now into Week 3 of the new year. How are your resolutions going? Mine are going pretty good I guess. They had to do with being better with money, going to more concerts, and being on time for my radio show. The last two are the ones that I have the biggest trouble with. Anyway, here's the playlist for this week:

January 18, 2012 Playlist! "The season rubs me wrong, the summer swells anon"

The season rubs me wrong
The summer swells anon
So knock me down, tear me up
But I would bear it all broken just to fill my cup
Down by the water and down by the old main drag

Today's theme is cold... or rather staying out of the cold and trying to keep warm. By theme, I don't really mean that I'm playing cold songs or even songs about cold. This morning I played songs that can keep you warm! Mostly they are fast-tempo songs that can get you going this morning. I hope that I was successful in that endeavour! Stay warm, Saskatoon.

January 11, 2012 Playlist!

Some people only listen to the first half of an album. I'm not one of those people. So today I played deep tracks from some of my favourite albums. Songs that don't get a lot of "play" anywhere. Songs that get forgotten. Songs that are buried gems. Sometimes the best things in life aren't right at the front, you have to be patient, dig deeper, and listen.
