A Good Excuse for a Missed Week

First of all, I'd like to thank Glen for covering for me on Wednesday. I called him around 5am that morning to see if he could cover my show like we had talked about. Lucky for me, he was awake and willing to play music for two hours for all you Saskatoon and beyond folks.

So what was I doing up at 5am and not going to the radio station? Well, this is a good question and because you are such a loyal fan that you actually check out my blog, I will tell you why.

You see, I'm a doula. That is, I'm a birth coach for women going through labour. In this past week, I had two clients (and friends for that matter) who had babies last week. On Wednesday I got a call at 3am, after we had discussed the evening before that there would be no baby that night, saying that labour was started. I was there super quick as I had my escape bag all packed and ready to go. At 2:21pm on Wednesday, December 8th, a beautiful baby girl was born. If permission is given to me, I will post the birth story at my doula website - Beyond Birth Doulas.

As for the good ol' radio show, I'll be back this week! I don't have a theme planned for this week, but next week I will be playing winter songs in celebration of Winter Solstice and the first day of winter.

December 1st Playlist!

Last night I saw Rufus Wainwright, as I mentioned often through the course of today's show, and it was brilliant and awkward and unique all at the same time. He is definitely an amazingly talented musician and has a great personality. I had heard that he had been doing this "thing" where he didn't want anyone to clap between songs of his first set. Sure enough, it was announced at the beginning of the show (for those people who missed the sign outside the doors). He came out donning a cape-esque robe with a long train. He played for ONE HOUR with no interaction with the crowd, which was minimal at TCU Place (not even half full). The rest of the show was "normal" and he was really amazing, actually. He played Hallelujiah as a duet with Teddy Thompson, who opened for him and is quite amazing himself, which was the highlight of the show for me.

I want to send a special shout-out to my good buddy, Tina, who started hosting GE&H on Tuesdays from 6 to 8am. If you like my show, you'll love her music selections as well! My advice to her is to get music ready the night before and sleep in until 5:30... it's the only way to do this show. In -40 it's way more difficult to get down here. After a whirlwind of a week last week with the head shaving and all, I am settling back into regular programming here on CFCR as well as settling into having no hair. Before it was happening, I was very nervous and worried. Thinking back, I'm not even sure what I was nervous about! I guess I was worried about not recognizing myself or that not having hair would change me somehow. I have noticed people look at me differently - it's almost like people are looking at me like they are trying to figure me out or something; they look longer than they used to. Other than me being a bit colder than I used to be, I quite like having no hair! I'm a no muss, no fuss kind of person and this hairdo definitely works for that!

October 6th Playlist!

This morning it is beautiful outside in Saskatoon. With promises of a warm week and Thanksgiving weekend, I was excited to play a lot of music this morning. So I did. My voice sounds like crap because I have that cold that "going around" so I figure it's win-win. I don't talk, you don't hear me, and more music gets played. Good times!

In case you didn't hear, I'm shaving my head! This Friday on CFCR is when it's going to be happening. It will be videoed and will be happening ON AIR! Shaving my head for Community Radio!

This year for FM-Phasis I have decided to shave my head if I raise $2000 for my radio show. The most I have ever raised in my seven years of being the host of Wednesday's early Green Eggs and Ham show is around $1400. I am sure that you all will help me to achieve my goal! My lovely locks will be donated toward making wigs for cancer patients. Shaving my head takes it a step further!

Not everyone knows what I look like, so I though I would post some recent photos of me and my hair. Hopefully soon enough I will have a shaved head... with your help! If I raise $2000 for FM-Phasis I will, indeed, shave my head! Here are some photos...

Interview with Sarah Harmer

On Wednesday, I got to interview Sarah Harmer! It was aired that day on the Afternoon Buzz, but I thought that y'all might want to hear it if you missed the buzz. The interview was great! Feist vs. Ron Sexsmith

Recently, I became interested in finding out what other people think about the two different versions of the same song, Brandy Alexander. The story of the song is almost as good as the song itself, where Leslie Feist and Ron Sexsmith came together in Ottawa. Ron was drinking a "Brandy Alexander," which he had ordered because "it was the famous drink that got John Lennon and Harry Nilsson kicked out of the LA Troubadour back in the 70's." (The story is here) Later Feist sent him a lyric by email and they wrote the song that way, finishing up the touches in LA. Feist recorded it and put it on her 2007 hit album "The Reminder" and Sexsmith recorded it later and put it on his album "Exit Strategy of the Soul." Here are some videos of the two songs. Last night was The Cat Empire, tonight is Wolf Parade and I was and will be absent for both. I'm recovering from my Ness Creek adventure that happened last weekend. Ness Creek is such a great place for listening to music. A lot of people go for the party, but I go for the music. The workshop stages are my favourite of any music festival and Ness Creek has some amazing moments. Highlights of the weekend were: The Sadies rocking the main stage after the rain went away and the stars came out, The Karpinka Brothers backed by The Breakmen in a workshop, Little Miss Higgins, The Sunparlour Players, and Scott Nolan's new song about his road manager that passed away last winter. February 24th Dog Playlist!

This past week has been very difficult for me with the death of my beloved puppy, Clifford. Just last week he was wreaking havoc on me while I was in the studio bringing music to the people. In a very quick turn of events, he left this physical world. While I was devastated, I have found comfort in the fact that there are so many songs in the world about these wonderful animals. Dogs are, indeed, very special and he was even more exceptional. He was full of love and happiness. Even on the worst day, he could make you smile simply by resting his chin on your lap just in case you felt like petting his head. His most recent nickname was the gentle giraffe because of his gentle nature and long neck. He touched my life in a way that no other dog has. Last week's miss

As you may or may not know, last week (ie. February 10th) I missed my regular hosting spot for Green Eggs and Ham on CFCR. It was not necessarily a planned miss and technically I could have made it. However, I was up until the wee hours of the morning for my new "job" as a doula (ie. a birthing coach). The couple that I was supporting are avid CFCR supporters and listen to my show regularly. However, I don't think any of us thought too much about CFCR when their little boy was born at 10:55pm on Tuesday night. I got home at around 2:00am and thought about staying up all night and just wandering down to the station to host the show, but the days of all-nighters are definitely in my past. There was also a mix-up and I thought that there was a host scheduled to fill in. Alas, I was absent.

I have heard a few people say that last week's show as filled with dead air. That is definitely not good news and I will alert the station to that issue. Over the last week I have had so many people comment about my missed week that it made me realize that there are people who ACTUALLY LISTEN! It's funny because most of the time I don't think that anyone listens. I mean, how many people get up at 6am?! Well, more than I thought. So I would like to thank everyone who talked to me this week about my beloved radio show. I do love playing music every week and I thank you all for listening!
